I read this yesterday and it sounded just like my college campus in the 90s. Gas was pretty cheap, nobody cared about the environment, and bikes were very uncool. The irony of driving 1 mile to the gym to work out for 2 hours was lost on us.
You would absolutely get yelled at for riding a bike. My roommate (a rider) came home about once a month with some kind of fast food on him. Thrown from a car.

Honestly, I gave up bike commuting because the attitude in Chicago is similar. Driver’s don’t want you on the roads and don’t give you any space.
